Hello, reader!
School started for our kiddo this week, so now I get to think of silly poem ideas in the eternal carpool line. This limerick kick is probably a product of losing my job and choosing to cope with humor. We do what we can, yeah?
More than a couple of times lately I’ve heard myself say hold on, I’m finishing up my limerick! My own line makes me laugh.
With that said—hope you enjoy what follows! 🎉
Star Employee
That woman is a star, I know
But tomorrow we will let her go
Thank you for your work
Your bank account might hurt
At least your future’s bright! they wrote
LEGO
At midnight, Dad sleepwalks then trips
In a hall with eighty-five bricks
His plastic creation
Meets ruination
And so does the rest of his wits
Free Time
The other day I said hey honey
It’s been awhile since I made money
But I have ample time
To make up silly rhymes
And who wouldn’t pay to be this funny
Mealworm
At the park a toddler devoured
Small noodles that left his mouth sour
The spaghetti had germs
Cause they really were worms
So his tastebuds needed a shower
Hey Aaron
Today I said hey to this Aaron
Who strutted about like a heron
When asked why he dances
He said these advances
Are simply my method for carin’
Traffic Jams
Dear mom, I cartwheeled to Grammy’s
Showing off my comfiest jammies
When you’re ready to wake
I’ll have made my escape
But I looked left then right, don’t worry
Afterthoughts
A few years ago, I would’ve been appalled by the sight of my current notes. My handwriting was once so neat and uniform people would joke about creating a font from it. I only wrote with a black Pilot G-2 07 pen in lined notebooks.
Now I’ll use whatever I can to get my ideas out. Cheap graph paper, almost-dried-up colored Crayola markers, and handwriting as loose and wonky and expressive as I’d like. These little differences represent a big shift inside me. I’m becoming free from the insufferable weight of perfectionism. It’s such a good feeling.
Tell us in the comments:
What subject should I use to inspire my next limerick?
What’s making YOU smile these days?
Off to make more rhymes!
—E.T.
PS. If you want more limericks in the future, let me know with a click of that heart. 💛
You asked what's making me smile, and it's these limericks and the accompanying art. Thanks, Erika.
AWESOME limericks - and art - Erika! Loved 'Mealworm' in particular! 🤣
I love that you're using whatever you've got to hand for your notes. I topped up our printer tray with the last of our pack of paper this afternoon - and when I was then looking for a large sheet of paper to plan my next post on I had just the thing! That paper wrapping - salvaged from the recycling bin - was huuuuuuuuge when I opened it up! 😊
