How beautiful and wholesome! Loved and laughed out loud at the cartoons. Your grandma and I are kindred spirits, it seems, as I also love food and think what I’m going to eat the next day 😂
Oh my gosh! This was the best! It was so heartwarming to read but also very comical! Your drawing of Obaachan is so much like her👍 Great job! I agree with Aaron: You need to make this a series or perhaps you can make it into a comic strip?
Erika, this post has been a delight from start to finish. Absolutely beautiful, and I love the artwork! I think I'm rather like Obaachan - I'm always plotting the next thing I'm going to cook, and then can't wait to cook it! 😊
Most of the time I favour protein and fat over sugar and starch in order to keep optimal control of my type 1 diabetes, although it's not always convenient (for instance, if I'm out and the only option is a sandwich!). Until I started eating low-carb I had no idea just how many dishes can be made my magicking cauliflower into alternatives to various starches! 🤣
Believe it or not, my veg-hating teenage grandson loves my roasted Brussels sprouts with garlic, from Mark Bittman's recipe on the NYT website. I don't bake or own a cookie jar.
What an absolutely delightful read this morning. I agree with Aaron that this must become a mini-series of some kind. I know I've read a lot of your work Erika, but I swear, every single time I read anything from you, I'm just in awe of your writing style, technique, playful humor, and depth weaved into every post.
Thank you!! I just had this thought. Maybe I should find our penpal letters from our childhood and see what kind of gems are written in there. I loved our way of keeping in touch. 💌
Nadia—may those memories of your granny always be close to your heart.

Glad it could make you laugh! I can't wait to see what other fun things she says in the future.
Requesting that this becomes at least a mini-series.
And make postcards? 🙃

I’m glad you liked it so much! And it actually started out as a comic strip but I can’t draw well enough and it would take way too much work. 🤪
Maybe I’ll commission you to do the comics/illustrations. 😉
Sure! You can do the people and I can do the rest lol! You are great depicting the likeness of people with your style😊

I want to hear some of your favorite meals to cook! Do you already have a post on this that I might've missed? 🕵🏻♀️
Ooooooh, now I don't have a post about that specifically, although there's a recipe at the end of this one: https://rebeccaholden.substack.com/p/36-the-kitchen-page

As a grandmother known for cooking (among other things), I enjoyed this. You two look so happy together. And I love your playful icon.
Thank you for reading, Rona! I’d be curious to know what meals are most requested. 😊 Sounds like your grandkids are lucky!!

Oooo how splendid! I’ve been hearing a few folks on Substack sing praises about NYT recipes. Will have to check it out!
You do have to subscribe but it’s worth the money. I’m about to cook another NYT favorite now.
I’m already a subscriber! Just haven’t ventured to it yet. Have a lovely dinner!

YES! Those are precious. Will cherish those forever.
This was a heartwarming read, Erika! Thank you for sharing your experience and Obaachan's translations 🤭
